Tuesday | Week 3
Since Jesus is the Word (John 1:1,ESV), what He says naturally exudes authority. The official in this story is imploring Jesus to come and heal his son. Jesus first responds with a comment about the general lack of belief among His fellow Israelites, unless it is accompanied by visible signs and wonders. However, the man is not deterred and redoubles his demand by saying, “Sir, come down before my child dies” (John 4:49, ESV).
In response, Jesus does not move. He only speaks. “Go. Your son will live” (John 4:50, ESV). Ultimately, the man departs believing Christ’s statement. A servant meets him on his way to bear the wonderful news that his son had turned the corner toward recovery. The official then discovers that improvement began at the same time Jesus spoke the words, “Your son will live.” Consequently, the man and his household found their new faith in Christ.
Words are one of the most objective and utilitarian features in all of creation. They can be spoken, heard, sung, prayed, written, read, memorized, pondered, and obeyed. While Christ could continuously reveal Himself through miracles and wonders, He has chosen something as simple as a book to disclose Himself to people throughout the ages. We are best acquainted to Him through His Word.
In life, we will urge Jesus to do something for us. Many times, He will respond by speaking something to us. Let us remember, “All Scripture is breathed out by God” (1 Timothy 3:16, ESV), and is “living and active” (Hebrews 4:12, ESV). It is a staple of our transformation. It is the lamp for our feet, the seed in the sower’s hand, and the sword that divides even to the depths of our soul (Psalm 119:105; Matthew 13:1; Hebrews 4:12, ESV). His Word brings illumination, growth, and discernment. We can believe that what He says to us is also what He intends to accomplish for us. There is comfort in knowing that rather than endlessly clamoring for a new sign, He has made it possible for us to hold fast to His established Word. “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17, ESV).
