Thursday | Week 11
I love weddings. I am privileged to be able to attend a few each year. I totally melt when the bride walks down the aisle. I love watching and experiencing all of the emotion involved, because two people fell in love! One wedding, in particular, stands out to me after reading John 13 and the story of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet.
Some of my dearest friends chose to wash one another’s feet during their wedding ceremony. As precious as that moment was, it was a bit awkward for those of us watching. Although I’m sure they were showered and clean for their wedding day, it seemed odd to watch them perform such an intimate, and even lowly act, for one another. But I suppose that was the whole point!
I imagine Peter could relate. Peter must have thought it was strange that Jesus was washing the feet of his disciples. In their culture, only a servant or slave would wash the feet of a guest. There is no way that someone at that time would have allowed their leader and mentor to stoop low as a servant and do such an act.
In hindsight, I understand why my friends washed one another’s feet during their wedding ceremony. It symbolized an ultimate act of service. In the same way, we are called to love, serve, and sacrifice for one another just as Jesus modeled.
Words are great, but actions show genuine commitment. Christ was committed to his disciples. His covenant of love was demonstrated that day by washing their feet, and eventually by dying on a cross. Although my friends who washed one another’s feet were married, this level of sacrificial service should be extended to all—spouse, family, friend, and even stranger. We are called to love and serve others just as Christ loves and serves us.
What acts of love, service, sacrifice, and commitment are you allowing God to perform through you? How are you using this day to be a conduit of his love to others? When you consider the amazing love Christ has for you, does it compel you to love others? Figuratively speaking, how can you grab a bucket of water and a towel and show love to those around you today?
