Matthew 4:18 NIV
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
Matthew 14:19-20 NIV
"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people." At once they left their nets and followed him.
Matthew 4: 21-22
Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
1. The initiator of discipleship is Jesus.
Hebrews 12:2 - We fix our eyes on Jesus, the [author, champion, pioneer, founder, originator, initiator] of our faith...
A disciple is an adherent and follower of a Master, an intimate companion in some common endeavor, and one who learns and promotes a particular ideology.
Remain. Love. Fruit.
2. The cost (and reward) of discipleship is radical surrender.
Charles Spurgeon
"Nothing teaches us about the preciousness of the Creator as much as when we learn the emptiness of everything else."
3. The result of discipleship is a missional lifestyle.
Romans 10:9 NIV
"Declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved."
