Step Out

Steps • Week 2

As followers of Jesus, we are called to grow in our discipleship and to make disciples. But what does discipleship really mean? For the second part of our Steps study, Dave Brown and Wopsle help to answer that question and also explore what discipleship looks like at Redeemer.

Redeemer exists to see Christ exalted in our church, community and world.

So what exactly is a disciple?

A disciple is anyone committed to pursuing Christ and Christ’s priorities in the world.

If I simply attempt to just add Christ to my current life, I will fail miserably as a disciple.

So what type of lifestyle are we committing to as disciples of Jesus?

Acts 2:42-45 NIV

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

  2. Fellowship
  3. Mission

So how important is discipleship?

Matthew 28:19-20 NIV

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

The mission of the church has always been to make disciples that make disciples.

Ezekiel 47:2-5 NIV

He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was trickling from the south side. As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle-deep. He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist. He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in—a river that no one could cross.
