The Old in The New

The Bible • Week 2

Throughout the New Testament, we find numerous references and quotations of the Old Testament text. But in addition to these overt references, there also exist more subtle ways that the Old Testament influenced the New. In week 2 of our series studying the Bible, Dave Brown explores this usage and expands on how we find the old in the new.

New Testament authors quoted the Old Testament

Revelation 1:7 NIV

"Look, he is coming with the clouds," and "every eye will see him, even those who pierced him"; and all peoples on earth "will mourn because of him." So shall it be! Amen.

Daniel 7:13-14 NIV

"in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

New Testament authors alluded to the Old Testament

Revelation 1:12-16 NIV

And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades."

Daniel 7:9-10 NIV

"As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire and its wheels were all ablaze. A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.

New Testament authors developed themes from the Old Testament

Son of Man

It was not God + Messiah, it was God = Messiah

God has been up to the same thing since the very beginning—unveiling a divine rescue plan.

Progressive Revelation is the revealing of God's redemptive plan over the course of time.
