Slow Down and Catch Up With God

Unhurry • Week 2

Mark 4:35-41 tells a story of Jesus, after a long day of teaching, taking a rest at the back of the boat that He and His disciples were in. For week two of our Unhurry series, Adam Barnett explores this passage and offers some practical tips for slowing down and catching up with God.

Am I addicted to hurry?

Walter Adams

"To walk with Jesus is to walk with a slow, unhurried pace. Hurry is the death of prayer."

We need to slow down and catch up with God.

Mark 4:35-41 NIV

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

Richard Swenson

"Margin is the space that once existed between our load and our limits. Margin is the space between vitality and exhaustion. It is our breathing room, our reserves, our leeway. It is the opposite of overload. When Jesus went to the back of the boat, he was practicing margin."
