Sabbath

Unhurry • Week 3

Oftentimes, we as humans can feel like we are working everyday of the week. But scripture clearly tells us that God blessed the Sabbath and that we are not to do any work on the Sabbath. Guest speaker Ryan Myers explores this concept of the Sabbath, why the Sabbath is important for us, and how to start practicing the Sabbath.

"Knowing God is more important than knowing about God."

Genesis 2:1-2 NIV

Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

Exodus 20:8-11 NIV

"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day.

Why most of us don't practice the Sabbath:

  • Pride
  • Distractions
  • Fear

Remember these two things:

  • Definitions matter
  • Pay attention to what you're paying attention to

We are all practicing various things.

  • What are you currently practicing?
  • What do you desire to practice going forward?

Sabbath is about practicing delight!

Dan Allender

"The only parameter that is to guide our Sabbath is delight. Will this be merely a break or a joy? Will this lead my heart to wonder or routine? Will I be more grateful or just happy that I got something done?"

Rhythm and improvisation as a means of both creating & connecting

Big questions begging for answers in adolescence that oftentimes go with us into adulthood:
1. What is life for?
2. Who am I?
3. Does my life matter?

Jeff Johnson

"The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask."

The most important and holy decision we make multiple times a day, every day, that we often are not even aware of –> What shall I give my attention to?
