WEEK 2

WISE SPEAKING

September 29, 2019 | Daniel Bunn

Proverbs tells us that life and death are in the power of the tongue. But we must remember that there is so much more to speaking wisely than simply knowing what to say. In week 2 of our study of Proverbs, Daniel Bunn explores what it really means to use words of wisdom rather than of folly.

Wise Speaking

1000 words per waking hour

We either speak wisely or foolishly.

To speak wisely is to know what to say.

Proverbs 15:2 NIV

The tongue of the wise dispenses knowledge, but the mouth of fools pours out folly.

Wise people speak the truth.

Wise people know what to say, and they know how to say it.

Proverbs 16:24 NIV

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

Proverbs 25:15 NIV

Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.

Wise people speak the truth, and they speak it graciously.

Wise people know what to say, how to say it, and they know when to say it.

Proverbs 15:23 NIV

To make an apt answer is a joy to anyone, and a word in season, how good it is!

Wise speakers speak the truth, speak it graciously, and they speak it in season.

Wise people know what to say, how to say it, when to say it, and they know why they say it.

Proverbs 18:21 NIV

Life and death are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.

Whoever, then, thinks that he understands the Holy Scriptures, or any part of them, but puts such an interpretation upon them that does not tend to build up this twofold love of God and our neighbor, does not yet understand them as he ought. // St. Augustine

The Truth is this:

God so loved the world that he sent his only Son, that whoever believes in him would not perish but have everlasting life.
