LET’S BE HONEST
September 27–October 18
Our emotions have a way of overwhelming us and making us feel weaker and incapable. As a result, we continually attempt to mask how we are truly feeling in an effort appear stronger and more in control. During this series we are going to have an emotional reality check and be truly honest about how we are feeling. Because the truth is, weakness is found in concealing the truth and strength is found when those things are brought into the light and we allow God to heal us.
We are going to get angry; it's guaranteed. And anger is not sinful...sometimes. The key differences are where it comes from, what it leads to, and what it seeks. Adam Barnett concludes our emotional reality check with a explanation of these differences and a challenge to seek the truth of our own anger.
Fear can come upon us in many circumstances, and it's a powerful feeling that can overwhelm all reason. We all feel fear, but we don't truly understand it in the context of fearing the Lord. In week 3 of our study on honest emotions, Bill Clark reminds us that fear of the Lord is the only thing to fear and what that really means in light of our relationship with Him.
Our society has made an unrelenting pace of life acceptable and almost expected. We fill our schedules with an ever-increasing number of commitments with no regard for building in rest. Rest can be seen as unproductive and unnecessary. But Adam Barnett challenges us to look at the life of Jesus and his habit of rest as the call to view rest as an essential part of our spiritual discipline.
Amidst the difficult things we face and the grief and lament we feel, it can also seem that God is distant. Our trust in God wanes even as His presence remains constant. Bill Clark encourages us of that truth that God is closer than we could ever realize.
